Scottish Jewish religious and community leaders have often taken an active role in wider civic affairs. In 1883, Michael Simons ' a successful fruit merchant, arts patron, and a central figure of Glasgow's Jewish community ' was the first Jew to become a city councillor. Twentieth-century religious leaders such as Dr IK Cosgrove (Garnethill, Glasgow) and Rabbi Dr Salis Daiches (Salisbury Road, Edinburgh) met and corresponded with Christian colleagues, and more recently Scotland's Jews have been leading participants in interfaith organisations, events and outreach programmes. The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities (SCoJeC) actively fosters ongoing dialogue between Jewish communities and wider Scottish society.
